Lighting for gardens Buyers Guide

Bollard lights

As opposed to spreadlights ("garden lights on a stick"), bollard lights can be thought of as "garden lights in a stick". LED and compact fluorescent lamps used in some garden bollard lights have a longer life than the halogen lamps used in spreadlights, which makes such garden lights a good choice for applications involving regular use on a timer, such as driveway and entrance lighting.

The smallest garden bollard lights are the slim 12 volt l.e.d (light emitting diode) bollard range from ME Lighting of Australia; they don't produce a pool of light as much as a glow to waymark a path. This type of bollard lighting can also be good for defining the corners of box hedges where they change shape or direction. The long l.e.d. life (50,000 hours), very low energy consumption, discrete appearance and the ability to use a long cable run powering several from a transformer in a garage or outbuilding makes them a great choice for waymarking a path at intervals of 3-5 metres; the warm white l.e.d is the most popular l.e.d. choice, and the led bollard is available in 2 sizes, 25 & 50cm high, and a choice of copper or stainless steel spike mount housing. Remember that their job is waymarking a route, not providing area lighting.

Bel lighting offers one of the widest ranges of exterior bollard lights for use in domestic and small commercial projects. Bel's bollard lighting range includes short and tall designs in stainless steel, bronze, stone and hardwood plus a variety of colour powder-coated aluminium bollard lights and matching wall lights. Bel offers 240v versions featuring the G9 mains voltage halogen lamp, available in 25w or 40w rating which can be dimmed using an ordinary wall dimmer for subtle garden lighting around a patio or deck, as well as compact fluorescent models which combine long lamp life and low energy consumption for regular use in driveway lighting. Popular bollard lighting choices are the stainless Cubix range, Onyx range in bronze, black or silver grey and BEL's timber and stone range consisting of 5 iroko and blue limestone model ranges in round (Spirit, Sumo, Strida) and square (Spirit KFL and Strida KFL) shapes which all use compact fluorescent lamps up to 20w.

The Elipta garden bollard light is a discrete spike mounting garden light only 300mm tall and available in 12 halogen volt versions, for connection to transformers along with other low voltage garden lights, or 240v models for direct connection to mains wiring. This is a popular new bollard lighting product, known for its clean and simple modern style and its availability in a choice of stainless steel, copper and black aluminium. 240 volt ES models are designed for long life, low energy 11w or 15w compact fluorescent lamps for higher light output around driveways and public areas; G9 mains voltage halogen lamp versions can be dimmed using an ordinary wall dimmer for subtle lighting around a patio or deck.
