Lighting for gardens Buyers Guide

Brass garden lights

One feature of brass garden lights is that they are heavy enough not to be disturbed easily and are as tough as old boots. So brass garden lights are a good choice where family pets or footballs may disturb lighter weight aluminium garden lights; they are also usually too heavy for fox cubs to lift if your garden is in an area with a fox problem.

Brass is one of the best materials for underwater lighting, being mechanically robust and resistant to all chemicals as well as heavy enough not to be disturbed easily by fish or water currents . The M2500 Nautilus 20-50 watt brass underwater light is made from cast brass, pressure-tested during manufacture and available with frosted lens or internal glare louvre options. It is supplied with a U bracket for fixing to underwater mounting blocks or supports, but it can also be used without the bracket as a waterproof uplight set into cobbles over a reservoir, or even used in bog gardens or waterlogged areas as a recessed light. Optional heavy mounting base and mounting spike assist location on planting shelves or in planting baskets. The heavier weight of brass underwater lights means they are less likely to be disturbed than lighter weight aluminium ones.

As its name suggests, the "Amphibian" range of cast brass recessed garden uplights is rated for underwater use and can therefore be used in waterlogged locations as well as paving, lawns and gravel areas. With internally adjustable lampholder for 20-50 watt lamps and an optional brass niche and mounting cylinder which allows perfectly flush installation in paving, the Amphibian range features models with plain lens and rim, a grill for use in gravel areas or to guard bare feet from a hot lens, glare shield for use where light needs to be shielded from the viewpoint and "spider", an ingenious conical mirror device enabling these recessed fittings to "waymark" a driveway or woodland walk. An internal honeycomb glare louvre which clips onto the lamp is a useful accessory near a path or terrace. M2801 and M2810 are the next step up in power to 75w in recessed garden lights.

Spike spotlights in brass include the N520X, which has a glare shield, finned spike and locking adjustable knuckle joint. This is one of the best all-round traditional-style 12v brass garden spotlights. Brass step lights are popular as they blend well with stone and on timber; the choice includes eyelid-style, surface (M2066) and recessed (M2006) outdoor lights, M2067 surface steplight with grill, M2065 with frosted glass for lighting across areas, and M2077 wall mount downward outdoor light, often used for steplighting as well as for patio lighting from under a seat or from a pergola crossbeam. All of the above products are finished in a textured, sandblasted finish which usually weathers evenly to an ochre colour to blend with gravel. Polished brass garden lights can take longer to weather to a consistent colour finish and tends to adopt a much darker patina than sandblasted brass.

Patilo's B1002X and B1003X brass spike garden spotlights are available in both 12v and 240v versions. The ME Lighting EyeLED steplight will soon be available in brass, incorporating 6 led's hidden under an eyelid hood cleverly makes a surface mount light look like a recessed one while achieving total simplicity of installation.

Find the type of light you are looking for first and then check to see if the colour you want is listed; if not, it may be worth e-mailing to ask about the finish you want.
