4 Ways to Light your Patio

During the warmer months we focus more on our garden and in particular our patio areas. And with it often being one of the more expensive parts of our garden it makes sense to want to get more out it and use it for longer; something that can be achieved with effective patio lighting.

There are various patio ideas to explore to make your outdoor space better, including a range of patio lighting ideas which will provide different results and effects. Below, we’re going to share 4 ways to light your patio to give you brilliant solutions for lighting your outdoor space.

1 Install outdoor wall lighting

If you have a more traditional external set up where the patio is located next to the house, you probably won’t have a structure from where you can place decorative lighting overhead. If that’s the case, we’d recommend considering installing permanent light fittings which can be connected to the electrical circuit of your home. You can control them with a standard switch, and they provide a modern finish to an otherwise traditional aesthetic and will cast a gorgeous glow in your external areas. We have a fantastic selection of outdoor wall lighting options with everything from up & down outdoor LED wall lights to wall spotlights and PIR sensor lights.

2 Use Lighting to zone your patio

If your patio connects different areas of your garden, use lighting to define each section. This will help create continuity throughout your outdoor area, provide the perception of depth and be a great source of light to help guests move safely around the space at night.

3 Make use of your pergola

A lot of people like to have pergolas in their patio area, and this provides a perfect frame to explore patio lighting ideas. Festoon lights can be a good option but it’s also a place where bigger lanterns and hanging lights can be used to illuminate with great effect. You can find some terrific hanging downlights in our range of professional Elipta lighting solutions with a current favourite being the Elipta Moonray Hanging Downlight which is available in black, copper, brown and natural copper.

4 Plant spotlights

Spotlights are a clever way to illuminate garden areas and patios discretely and unobtrusively. There are many different types available so there’s something to suit every garden, whilst also providing a more subtle illumination. Furthermore, spike spotlights feature a pivoting head so the light can be directed exactly where the user requires whilst 12v spike spotlight options are available for a safer way to light up the space.
